As women of the Lord, we know we are set apart from women of the world. The ideal woman is described in Proverbs 31, she is a woman of extraordinary character. Can I share something? I used to think Proverbs 31 was dumb...there I said it. I hated the idea of people telling me how I had to act, that this woman was better than me. Then BAM, I realized I was undeserving of the grace Jesus gave and undeserving of the life he has chosen me for. So the least I could do was to reconsider the Proverbs 31 woman because I know myself and I know that I love to rebel. To rebel against the norm or to rebel because I am being told to do better. So fighting my rebellion I went to the Lord and prayed. I asked him to show me what Proverbs 31 meant in our modern-day and how I could strive to be the best me that I could be.
The Lord showed me Proverbs 31 in a new way. So while I sat at my local Starbucks, I started to read, then new words started to flow. The Lord showed me that these words didn't just apply to wives but to all women. Women who were single, married with kids, teens, single moms, sisters, and mothers. I want women to know that what they plant and nurture now, will blossom and grow later. So let's look at what the Lord shared with me and the modern application. We will go verse by verse, and after each verse will be what God shared with me. Are you ready? I am, let's do this!
Proverbs 31:10-31 (NIV)
10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
A woman of standards is desired, someone with strength and gentleness. She is more valuable than anything money can buy.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
This is a woman that does what she says. The people in her life do not doubt her. She builds up the people around her with words from the Lord, that they would lack nothing.
12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
When she speaks and when she acts, she brings life, not death. Her words are kind, not meant for destruction but life. She corrects with gentleness and loves in abundance.
13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
When she is about her day, she does everything with excellence unto the Lord. Excited about her work and she gives her all.
14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
She is like nothing else around, bringing something to the table that no one else can.
15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.
She starts her day with purpose, with her priorities in order. Her family comes before anyone else but she takes care of the people who work for her as well.
16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard.
She knows how to make money and how to manage it well. She is a woman of wise business.
17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
She does nothing halfway and she is always prepared, laziness is not a part of her vocabulary.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
She pays close attention to her work and the businesses she runs. She takes care of each detail, with everything running smoothly, not leaving life to chance.
19 In her hand, she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She is diligent in her work and does her job to the full. She practices her craft to keep her skills sharp.
20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
She is kind to people who are poor and she helps them whenever she can.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She is diligent in taking care of her family and she trusts fully in the Lord.
22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
She is diligent in her handy work and she keeps her marriage sacred. She dresses in a way that anyone may be comfortable around her.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
She is married to a respectable man, someone who has worked hard for his position and is a man of integrity.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She knows her skills and resources. She knows what she is doing and she is good at it.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She is a woman of wise words and deeds. She does not walk in fear but in hope and joy for her future.
26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She knows the Lord and follows his wisdom. She can be trusted when she speaks, her words are safe and true.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
She keeps an eye out for her family, making sure to confront wrong and to encourage right. She is an example of all she expects.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
She is an example to her children and she loves them abundantly. She has earned the favor and respect of her children and husband by her consistency.
29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
She goes above and beyond what others deem as "Good." She blows people's minds with all that she does and how well balanced she is.
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
She is never fake and has confidence in who she is in the Lord. She shows off who God is not who she is.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
She will be recognized in God's time for all of her hard work and her hard work is seen in Heaven.
The day after the Lord showed me all of this I had to prep for a hurricane and the potential of major power outages while my husband was at his work doing the same. I got upset that throughout the day my husband never checked up on me to make sure our house would be taken care of. I wanted him to fret over me. Then the Lord said to me while I was washing dishes, "Stop whining, your husband trusts you fully, that's why he hasn't called, he trusts you." I realized I had been praying for this opportunity just the day before. I wanted to know my husband trusted me. When I talked to my husband the next day and explained to him what the Lord said, my husband confirmed everything. He said, "Yes, that is completely right, I knew you had everything under control."
The Lord is so faithful when I pray, I pray to be who this woman was, the "ideal woman" of God's word. We can all ask God for her work ethic, her kind heart, her wisdom, her passion, anything from her would add to us. We always have room for improvement in our lives because we are human, we sin, and we mess up. I try and seek improvement in every aspect of my life. To be a better mother, wife, friend, and co-worker. One day I hope to reflect the Lord the way this woman did. I hope that he would be seen far beyond myself. I thank God every day that I can grow more and more in him. We do not need to condemn ourselves where we lack but to know that we are a part of the living vines. Always growing, always being pruned, and we can always bear new fruit.
