The Fruit of the Spirit: The Seed and Love

Updated: Apr 27

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5: 22-23 ESV

Have you ever felt like you were failing at being a good Christ-follower? I know I have. The uncomfortable feeling that I wasn't loving or kind enough, overwhelmed me. One day the Lord laid it on my heart to study the Fruit of the Spirit, a lesson I already knew, but he wanted me to see it in a new way.

It has been a few years now since my first Fruit study and it has been life-changing. The Lord rewired my brain, changed my perspective, and gave me hope. I would like to share that hope with you.

God starts by planting a seed that encompasses all of who God is. God plants the seed and intends to garden our hearts if we let him. One tree of life, one Fruit of the Spirit.

With the seed in mind and your Bible in hand, you too can have a heart change. Pursuing God to grow the seed and for him to produce the Fruit. We no longer have to fail as a Christ-followers but feel empowered by the King. ”I should have been showing the Fruit because I know Jesus,” but I never let God do the weeding and gardening. Jesus wants us to spend time with him and to allow him to tend to the seed and garden of our hearts. We have to give our time to the gardener.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" God can, in the next verse it says he searches our hearts and minds. As we go on this journey to grow in the Fruit of the Spirit, remember, your heart will try and deceive you, but God sees you and he will take care of you, let him in.

Our hearts, in God's hands, are rich soil that nurtures the newest of seeds and the ones that have been buried for years. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to, "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the springs of life." There is great hope when we invite God in our hearts, the ones that are sick without him, can become springs of life with him. We have hope because of Jesus, who so deeply loves us, and gave us a great commandment to live by.

Love

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:28-31 ESV

God calls us to love him with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength, this week we will focus on the heart. What a huge thing to take on, to pursue the purest of love. God revealed to me that the first commandment makes the second happen. He changes our willingness to love "because we should," to a wanting to love because he loves us. Wow, if we pursue this first Fruit, if we pursue loving God and his love with our whole hearts, we will overflow with love for others.

The love that Galatians 5 talks about is Agape love. The greek definition is the selfless, Godly kind of love that cares for and promotes what is best for another person without hidden motive or personal gain. God's love for us has no hidden motive, he loves us because he is love, 1 John 4:7-8.

13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 ESV

God promises that we will find him when we seek him. My whole heart needs him daily to love the people in my life the way God wants them to be loved.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 EVS

5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippian 4:5-7 ESV

God asks us to trust him as he gardens the earth of our hearts. He will dig up what doesn't belong and he says that he will guard our hearts. To love fully we need to trust Love fully. When the Fruit of the Spirit starts to grow, the last thing we want is for the growth to be stunted by a rock that doesn't belong. When we seek Love we have to ask Him to search us out and to trust His faithfulness.

2 Prove me, OLord, and try me;

test my heart and my mind.

3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,

and I walk in your faithfulness.

Psalm 26:2-3

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10

Once God searches our hearts and pulls out the stones that don't belong, he can grow His Fruit to its fullest potential. Love grows when we let him garden the earth of our hearts. Over the next 5 weeks, would you let him garden? When we pursue love and its fullness, we get to walk in fullness. You cannot love in and of yourself, we all need Him and His love. Let us gain a selfless love for others, by pursuing the one who loves us.

16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love.

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

1 John 4:16

I would like to encourage you to find a verse on love this week and reflect on it each day. Read it, write it, memorize it! Ask God to show you what verse is for you. You can use one from this blog, you can google Bible verses on love, or look in the back of your Bible in the concordance for references. When we take the time to memorize scripture, we plant it in our hearts. We encourage growth by giving nutrients to the garden of our hearts with scripture, prayer, and worship. I know you can do it and I am praying that God would show you His love in a way he never has, that you would overflow his love this week.
